Q&A
What do you love about being a mother in our industry?
I love that I get to do things with a whole new perspective, a whole new challenge, one that feels truly worthwhile, and centers me in a grounded space of staying focused on my WHY and my musical mission.
What's the greatest challenge?
The continued challenge of being held up to masculinized standards that don't naturally apply to the ways in which I work as a woman, mother, and cyclical feminine creature. Also, now, the late hours and large crowds of people in festival scenes that I used to navigate easily are a wholllle 'nother thing. Staying regulated and giving my baby a consistent sleep, nap, and eating schedule while navigating festival life is a new challenge. Wearing a whole layer of more hats than I used to. Now I wear like 23 hats, whereas it used to be about 13.
What would you like to see change?
Giving us a spotlight. Making it easy for us to step out and up in our communities, and be sene for the special kind of extra work that we do every day to get where we're going; WHILE nourishing the next generation. I like how in some cultures, mothers are ushered to the front of the line, along with elders, no matter what. That's the kind of mindset I think we should adopt more in the Western world and music industry. Mamas can be kickass headliners too. ;)
